Studying at Puolanka High School

High school diploma and the Finnish matriculation certificate open the doors to many types of postgraduate studies, such as universities of applied sciences and universities. At Puolanka Upper Secondary School (High School, "lukio" in Finnish), the learning results are proven* to be good, as we have been selected as the best high school in Kainuu Region and the second best small high school in Finland in a national high school comparison.

The quality of our teaching is guaranteed by a knowledgeable teaching staff, a wide range of courses and small group sizes. In this way, students' individual situations can be better taken into account in all situations that arise. In addition, our high school students are offered many benefits, such as the opportunity to complete a driving license free of charge.

Studying at Puolanka High School is free of charge, and through an application you can apply to us from anywhere in the world. We help all future students in all practical matters, such as finding affordable student housing!

Modern facilities & equipment

The framework for studying at Puolanga high school is today. The barrier-free school building was commissioned in 2004, and the new gymnasium was completed in the fall of 2022. In our classes, you can also use a new personal laptop. We have a separate break room for students, where you can spend your free time, e.g. during free periods, making coffee or using the time to do homework.

In upper secondary school, you complete both compulsory and optional studies. In addition, you can add high school diplomas and other optional studies to your studies. Our course menu includes, for example, media psychology, expressive skills and getting to know working life. High school may transfer credits from studies completed elsewhere, the scope and level of requirements of which correspond to Finnish  General upper secondary education studies (approx. 38 h), e.g. in driving school and music institute.

Studying is more comfortable together

All high school students receive personal study guidance throughout their studies. In addition, student groups meet about once a month to discuss studying, course choices and student life. Our active Students' Union organizes the most interesting adventures to brighten up everyday school life!

Smooth studying

"In small study groups, it is easier to concentrate and, moreover, help is easily available. The same things are taught here as in a mass upper secondary school with four hundred students."
